Common Reed
(Phragmites australis)

Description: Native to the southern United States, it has become a problem here because it invades wetlands and can exclude native plants.

Habitat:

Height: 3 m

Broad-leaved Arrowhead
(Sagittaria latifolia)

Description: Distinctive 3-lobed leaves are variable and can be fat or skinny. Flowers white and waxy. Three petals.

Habitat: Water up to about 50 cm. deep, especially marshes, ponds, slow-moving rivers.

Height: 80 cm

Cow-parsnip
(Heracleum lanatum)

Description: Huge plant with large umbrella-shaped flower heads. Each "flower" actually an "umbel" comprised of a set of clusters of tiny flowers, each flower having 5 petals. Stem is thick and fuzzy. Leaves are large and resemble a maple leaf shape. Plant is smelly.

Habitat: Wet areas, particularly edges of marsh, streams.

Height: 2 m

Flowering: June - July



White Clover
(Trifolium repens)

Description: Grows in dense mats and when flowering makes a stunning view. White, rounded flowerhead actually cluster of tiny flowers. Leaves normally of three leaflets, with faint banding near base. Introduced from Europe.

Habitat: Open, sunny habitats, especially fields, roadsides. Grown as crop.

Height: 25 cm

Flowering: June - August
