Birds of the Wairarapa and where to see them
Kourarau Dam

This lesser-known gem of a wetland is perched high atop the Maungarakis east of Masterton. Good viewing opportunities for waterfowl here, and a tantalizing marsh at the south end provides nesting habitat for ducks.

The dam was built early last century by enterprising engineers to generate hydroelectric power for the valley. It is still operational and as energy costs soar may yet come into its own.
